Isner Defeats Ryan Harrison in All-American Final as US Open Series Kicks Off in Atlanta

Series Continues This Week with Women’s Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif.

 

John Isner continued his perfect summer stateside on Sunday by winning his fourth BB&T Atlanta Open title, defeating compatriot Ryan Harrison, 7-6(6), 7-6(7), in the third All-American Atlanta final in the last eight years.

 

Isner blasted 23 aces against Harrison to win his eighth straight match and second ATP title in as many weeks, following his victory in Newport. Isner, who on Monday will again be the top-ranked American man, at No. 18, has won half of his 12 ATP titles at US Open Series events — four in Atlanta and two in Winston-Salem.

 

Isner’s victory capped a week in which five of the eight quarterfinalists in Atlanta were American, including Georgia Tech senior Christopher Eubanks and former French Open boys’ champion Tommy Paul, each of whom was appearing in his first ATP quarterfinal.

 

The US Open Series continues this week with the Bank of the West Classic, a WTA International event in Stanford, Calif., featuring 2017 Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and wild card Maria Sharapova, along with Americans Madison Keys, CoCo Vandeweghe, CiCi Bellis, Alison Riske, Jennifer Brady, former Stanford players Nicole Gibbs and Kristie Ahn, Wimbledon junior champion Claire Liu and Caroline Dolehide.

 

ESPN’s 50-plus hours of weeklong coverage from Stanford begins Monday, with early-round matches, through Friday’s quarterfinals, streaming live on ESPN3 and the ESPN App. ESPN2 will air Saturday’s semifinals, at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET, and Sunday’s final, at 5 p.m. ET.
