RAIN INTERRUPTS THURSDAY ACTION
AT THE WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN
Five Round of 16 Matches Still to be Completed;
Quarterfinal Matches to Follow on Friday
RAIN REIGNS THURSDAY
Play was interrupted three times during Thursday afternoon and early evening by rain. A fourth band of rain settled in around 9 p.m., which led to play for the day being abandoned shortly after 11 pm. Five Round of 16 matches – two men’s and three women’s – still need to be completed. Two are in the first set, while three more have yet to take the court. Those matches will be played early Friday, with the winners coming back to play the quarterfinals later in the day.
RAIN POLICY FOR TICKET HOLDERS
Due to the inclement weather and the lack of a completed match on Center Court during the night session on Thursday, the session is considered incomplete. Further information on the rain policy can be found here.
WTA NO. 1 UPDATE
Thursday’s rain added extra intrigue to the chase for the WTA’s No. 1 ranking, with both Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina needing to finish their Round of 16 matches on Friday. Should they both lose those Round of 16 matches, Simona Halep would have the chance to clinch No. 1 with a win in her Friday quarterfinal against Johanna Konta. It will be the third time this season Halep has entered a match with the opportunity to reach No. 1 with a win. She also faced that in the French Open final against Jelena Ostapenko and the Wimbledon quarterfinal against Konta. Both those defeats came in three sets after she had won the first.

About the Western & Southern Open
The Western & Southern Open takes place August 12-20, 2017 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, 20 miles north of Cincinnati in Mason, OH. The tournament is one of the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 events on the men’s tour and a Premier 5 event for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), making it one of only five events in the world outside of the grand slams with events of that caliber occurring during the same week at the same venue. The tournament is also one of the last stops on the US Open Series before the US Open in New York. Since 1974, the tournament has contributed more than $10 million directly to its beneficiaries: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the Barrett Cancer Center and Tennis for City Youth.
About Paul Flory. All tourney directors should help grow the sport the way he did. He dedicated his life and donated his endless invisible hours to the Cincy tennis tourney. Ask Adele Robins. She ran the transport for players for decades with Paul at the helm.
He grew the sport. He was dedicated to the “Cincy” Tournament. He had a passion few mortals possess.
He was one of the worlds best tournament directors as well as promoter. His tourney in CINCY pulls in tennis fans from all over the country. Heavy with about 15 states that are around it. It’s also hugely popular with people from all over the world. The event is fabulous. Paul is gone. But his legacy will last forever. He never paid himself a salary. Nothing for decades. Actually For his whole career.
He grew the sport versus greedy, lazy “undertakers” that lost their tournaments in America. Why do I call them undertakers? Simple. They are killing the sport. Tennis needs its PATRONS.
