It will be a big day on Friday at the USTA National Women’s Senior 50-90 Hard Court Tennis Championships as singles finals in three age divisions highlight the day’s schedule of matches at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
On Thursday morning, four-time defending 50 and over champion Ros Nideffer of San Diego (Rancho Bernardo) advanced to Friday’s championship match after she eliminated third-seeded Shelly Works of San Antonio 6-1, 6-1. After dropping her serve at love in the first game of the opening set, Nideffer settled down and won 12 of the next 13 games to close out the match in 67 minutes.
The 57-year-old Nideffer, a former WTA touring professional who was ranked as high as No. 15 in the world, will face second-seeded Andrea Rice of Bethesda, Md., for the 50 and over singles title at 10 a.m. on Friday on Court No. 1.
In their most recent head-to-head meeting in senior competition, Nideffer and Rice played in the semifinals of the ITF Seniors World Individual Championships on clay in Miami Beach, Fla., last November. Nideffer pulled out a spectacular come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory.
“It’s exciting. That’s why I play the tournament. I wanted to be in the final and see what I can do. I would love to win it. Obviously, Andrea is a very tough opponent. I think she had match points on me (in Florida) and I managed to pull it out.”
The 60 and over singles final will pit top-seeded Susan Wright of Grand Junction, Colo., against fifth-seeded Shannon Gordon-Carney of Saint Louis. The match will begin not before 11:30 a.m.
In the 70 and over singles final, Brenda Carter, the top-seed from Charleston, S.C., will meet second-seeded Molly Hahn of Belmont, Mass., for the championship, which is scheduled for not before 1 p.m.
