WEATHER UPDATE: Rain suspended three matches on Sunday morning, and later led to the abandonment of play for the day. All four qualifying matches, including the three that were already started, will take place Monday. Qualifying action will start at noon, with the main draw session time remaining a 3 pm start.

TIDBITS Of INFO •

Two former US Clay champions headline the first night session of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. Ivo Karlovic, who won the 2007 title in the event’s last year at Westside Tennis Club, opens play at 3 pm against Ryan Harrison. Marcel Granollers, who won the following year when the tournament moved to River Oaks, will play 2018 semifinalist Taylor Fritz at 6 pm.

One other former US Clay winner is in action Monday, with 2009 singles champion Lleyton Hewitt playing doubles with fellow Australian Jordan Thompson against the second seeded team of Austin Krajicek and Artem Sitak Of New Zealand

The son of a past River Oaks International champion is also part of the opening night lineup. Twenty-year-old Casper Ruud takes on Hugo Dellien on Monday. Casper is coached by his father, Christian, who won at River Oaks in 1996, and was runner-up in 2001.

Two-time defending singles champion Steve Johnson will be in action on Monday, but not at River Oaks. Johnson will be throwing out the first pitch at Minute Maid Park on Monday before the Astros take on the New York Yankees.

Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship at River Oaks Country Club

River Oaks Country Club is hosting a professional tennis tournament for the 85th time when the 2019 Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship is held April 6-14. River Oaks first hosted its own tournament, The River Oaks International, in 1931, and its roster of former champions includes Jack Kramer, Tony Trabert, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, Ken Rosewall, Ivan Lendl, Guillermo Vilas and James Blake. Houston is the 21st city to host the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. The tournament came to Houston in 2001, and has been hosted at River Oaks since 2008. Started in 1910 by the USTA, the 2019 tournament will be the 109th competition for the Clay Court Championship. American Steve Johnson repeated as the singles champion in 2018 while the doubles champions were Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Austria’s Philipp Oswald.
