Tennis • Men’s Dubs • Cabal and Farah Make It Back-To-Back Grand Slams With Wimbledon & U.S. Open Titles

Apparently Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah were not satisfied with winning Wimbledon, their first Grand Slam title which they captured in dramatic fashion earlier this summer.

They wanted two.

Cabal and Farah won a second consecutive major when they defeated Horacio Zeballos and Marcel Granollers 6-4, 7-5 on Friday afternoon. The Colombians battled back from a break down in the second set to triumph after one hour and 31 minutes.

“Unreal; unreal; it’s amazing,” Cabal commented. “What a journey. If you tell us three months ago that this is going to happen, I probably will not believe you.

“But that’s the way (it is), this life that we are pretty blessed. We thank God to give us that we are healthy. We have a great team behind us that let us play (and) be 100 percent every day to play. We just put the work. Every day we just believe in work, push every day to be better.”

Cabal and Farah were way too good this fortnight, losing a grand total of one set in the second round. Their dominance means they are once again going back to Colombia with a Grand Slam title.

“The way Colombia received us when we came back from Wimbledon was really breathtaking,” Farah reflected, “and I think…I mean, I don’t even want to think about how crazy it gonna be now that we come back from the U.S. Open.

I think that back-to-back is quite an achievement.”

The women’s doubles title will be handed out on Sunday, when top seeds Ashleigh Barty and Victoria Azarenka go up against the fourth-seeded duo of Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens.

Sabalenka and Mertens defeated Vania King and Caroline Dolehide 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday afternoon. The Belarusian-Belgian pairing, which ended the run of Coco Gauff and Caty McNally in the third round, ousted another set of Americans after two hours and 19 minutes.
