Und zur Freude von Turnierdirektorin Sandra Reichel versprachen beide Finalistinnen: „Wir kommen wieder nach Linz.“

Corey Gauff, der Vater der Siegerin, machte beim Matchball seiner Tochter einen Luftsprung, tausende Tennisfans erhoben sich spontan von den Sitzen und spendeten beiden Spielerinnen einen Riesenbeifall für ein Match auf Weltklasseniveau.

Coco Gauff und Linz, das war heuer eine ganz spezielle Affäre: Erst musste die Nummer 107 der Welt in der Qualifikation spielen, weil sie ihr Kontingent an Wildcards (nur drei sind von der WTA erlaubt für Spielerinnen in ihrem Alter) bereits erschöpft hatte. Dann scheiterte sie in der Qualifikation gegen die Deutsche Tamara Korpatsch, rutschte aber als „Lucky Loser“ in den Hauptbewerb. Dann blieb sie konstant auf Finalkurs!

Und am Sonntagnachmittag hat sich dann ihr Traum mit dem Triumph beim „Upper Austria Ladies Linz 2019“ endgültig erfüllt. Zuvor hatte schon CNN um ein Telefon-Interview angefragt, generell waren das weltweite Medienecho und der Hype um Coco Gauff gigantisch.

Bei der Siegerehrung auf dem Center Court wurde die 15-Jährige mit Geschenken überhäuft, an Preisgeld kassierte sie 43.000 US-Dollar. Das spezielle Präsent war ein rosa Dirndlkleid vom Heimatwerk. „Es war eine wunderbare Woche, ich danke meinen Eltern, dem gesamten Team, den Ballkindern, Sponsoren, den Fans für ihre Unterstützung und Sandra Reichel für die tolle Organisation. Ich werde mich ein Leben lang an Linz erinnern“, sagte Coco Gauff.

„Der Sport, den man hier dieser Tage gesehen hat, war einfach überwältigend. Die Leidenschaft und Begeisterung bei allen waren in diesem Jahr ganz speziell, das ist mir diesmal extrem aufgefallen. Da merkt man auch, warum man das Ganze macht. Und es macht Lust auf das 30-Jahr-Jubiläum unseres WTA-Turniers, das wir im nächsten Jahr ganz groß feiern werden“, meinte eine emotional sehr bewegte Turnierdirektorin Sandra Reichel beim Pressegespräch.

Unmittelbar vor dem Finale zwischen Coco Gauff und Jelena Ostapenko sagte die Turnierchefin: „Heute schaut nicht nur die Tenniswelt nach Linz, sondern die ganze Sportwelt. Es ist einfach Wahnsinn, dass eine 15-Jährige hier im Finale steht und um den Titel spielt. Es ist wie ein Märchen und das freut mich für alle, die bei diesem Turnier involviert sind. Wir werden diesen Aufwind mitnehmen.“ 

Turnierbotschafterin Barbara Schett, die –  wie Sandra Reichel  – in schmucker Tracht erschienen ist am „Oberösterreich Tag,“ ergänzte: „Ja, die ganze Welt schaut heute nicht nur auf Coco, sondern hier nach Linz zum Upper Austria Ladies. Es ist wunderschön, dass sie hier ihren ersten WTA-Titel gewonnen hat. Das bleibt einer Spielerin ewig im Kopf.“
