Ricky’s pick for the Miami Open tennis quarterfinal between Fritz and Berrettini

March 26, 2025 by Ricky Dimon

There will be no single-season Sunshine Double in 2025, as both Jack Draper and Mirra Andreeva have already exited the Miami Open following their respective triumphs in Indian Wells. However, Taylor Fritz still has a chance to complete the career Sunshine Double.

The 2022 Indian Wells champion is three wins away from lifting the trophy in Miami for the first time. Before the American can look that far ahead, though, he will have to get past Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Fritz and Berrettini will be squaring off for the fifth time in their careers, and their head-to-head series has been entirely dominated by the former. In four previous meetings, Fritz is 4-0 overall and 9-1 in total sets. He has taken nine sets in a row off the Italian since losing their first one during Davis Cup competition in 2019. They most recently faced each other at the 2024 U.S. Open, where Fritz coasted to a 6-3, 7-6(1), 6-1 second-round victory.

The world No. 4 has to be considered a sizable favorite once again on Thursday. He is 13-5 this year following Miami defeats of Lorenzo Sonego, Denis Shapovalov, and Adam Walton–all in straight sets.

Berrettini did well to beat Alex de Minaur on Wednesday, but the Aussie had no days off following an intense three-setter against Joao Fonseca on Monday night. That was preceded by victories over Hugo Gaston and Zizou Begs, giving Berrettini a decent 9-6 record for the season.

The world No. 30 is dangerous because of his big serve and forehand, but Fritz also wields similarly huge weapons and also has big edge over Berrettini on the backhand side and a minor edge in movement/defense. He is also playing at home in the USA, too, so count on Fritz improving to 5-0 lifetime in this one-sided rivalry.

Pick: Fritz in 2
