Ricky’s tennis picks for French Open Day 9, including Zverev vs. Griekspoor

June 1, 2025 by Ricky Dimon

The remaining quarterfinal spots at the French Open will be handed out on Monday, when Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner, and Jack Draper take the court. Zverev may have an especially tough matchup on his hands in the form of Tallon Griekspoor.

Here are my picks for two of Monday’s best matchups.

(3) Alexander Zverev vs. Tallon Griekspoor

Zverev and Griekspoor also be squaring off for the 10th time in their careers when they clash in round four of the French Open on Monday. The head-to-head series stands at 7-2 in favor of Zverev, but don’t be fooled by those numbers–this matchup is extremely competitive. They met in the Roland Garros third round 12 months ago and Griekspoor led by a double-break in the fifth set before succumbing 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(10-3). Their first two 2025 contests were three-setters; Griekspoor won 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4) in Indian Wells before Zverev scored a 6-7(6), 7-6(3), 6-4 victory in Munich. Only once in their last five H2H matches has Zverev won in straight sets.

There is no reason to think that anything will be much different in this one. Zverev secured a recent title in Hamburg, but for the most part he has struggled since reaching the final in Melbourne at the start of the year. Meanwhile, Griekspoor is 21-11 this season and he will be back in the top 30 if he wins today. The Dutchman has a real shot at an upset.

Pick: Griekspoor in 5

(1) Jannik Sinner vs. (17) Andrey Rublev

Sinner and Rublev will also be going head-to-head for the 10th time. The matchup stands at a relatively close 6-3 in Sinner’s favor. They met three times in 2024, when Sinner prevailed 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-3 at the Aussie Open–on his way to the title–before they split a pair of three-setters at Masters 1000 events in Montreal and Cincinnati. The Italian has won two of their three previous clay-court tilts.

Rublev may struggle to be competitive this time. The Russian is down at No. 15 in the world and part of the reason–perhaps a big reason, in fact–why he is in the fourth round is that Arthur Fils gave him a walkover. Now he has to face the No. 1 player in the world, who is 15-1 this season. Sinner’s only loss is to Carlos Alcaraz in the Rome championship match. The top seed, who dropped a mere three total games to Jiri Lehecka on Saturday, should roll.

Pick: Sinner in 3
