An eventful opening day at Wimbledon leads into what will be a jam-packed Tuesday. There are still several matches that need to be completed after getting postponed due to darkness, so those players will take the court in addition to everyone in the top half of the men’s singles draw. Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic are among those on the order of play.
Here are my picks for two of Tuesday’s best matchups.
(30) Alex Michelsen vs. Miomir Kecmanovic
Michelsen and Kecmanovic will be facing each other for the third time in their careers. Both of their previous meetings came earlier this season and they split them at one win apiece. They Kecmanovic got the job done 7-6(3), 6-3 in Delray Beach (hard court) before Michelsen prevailed 6-4, 6-2 at the Estoril Challenger (clay)
This should be a fun one between two guys who can play well on grass, but it is a surface that unquestionably favors Michelsen. The 20-year-old American is already a two-time finalist ATP finalist, having been runner-up twice in Newport. He also advanced to the Mallorca semifinals this past week. Meanwhile, Kecmanovic has not yet won a grass-court match this surface. Look for the American’s serve and backhand to extend the Serb’s woes.
Pick: Michelsen in 5
Francisco Comesana vs. Corentin Moutet
Moutet is playing the best tennis of his life at the moment. The 26-year-old Frenchman made fourthr-ound Rune in Rome, ousted Taylor Fritz at Queen’ Club after qualifying for the main draw, and was the Mallorca runner-up this past weekend.
This is a first-ever contest between Moutet and Comesana, and it involves two players who don’t wield big firepower but find ways to win in less obvious fashion. Comesana was red hot earlier this season, but now he is 1-5 in his last six matches dating back to Madrid. Moutet owns a clear edge in current form and he is comfortable on grass–despite the fact that Comesana made a surprise appearance in the 2024 Wimbledon third round.
Pick: Moutet in 4
