The U.S. Mint has announced that legendary tennis player Althea Gibson will be featured on one of the 2025 American Women Quarters, part of a four-year program honoring the accomplishments and contributions of extraordinary women in U.S. history. This exciting tribute celebrates Gibson’s groundbreaking achievements as a multisport athlete and her lasting impact on both tennis and professional golf.
Launched in 2022, the American Women Quarters Program issues up to five new quarter designs each year through 2025. Each coin features a fresh reverse design celebrating a remarkable American woman, while the obverse retains the familiar likeness of George Washington — redesigned to mark this special series. The program highlights women from diverse backgrounds who have shaped the nation through their contributions in fields such as civil rights, government, science, arts, and sports.
Althea Gibson stands as a symbol of courage, excellence, and perseverance. Born in South Carolina and raised in Harlem, Gibson broke barriers as the first Black athlete to compete at the highest levels of international tennis. Her talent and determination shattered racial and social boundaries, paving the way for future champions such as Arthur Ashe, Venus Williams, and Serena Williams.
By the end of the 1950s, Gibson’s name was synonymous with excellence on the court. She captured 11 Grand Slam titles, including multiple championships at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the French Open. After dominating tennis, she made history again as the first Black woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) — proving her athletic prowess extended far beyond one sport.
The reverse (tails) of the 2025 quarter beautifully portrays Gibson in action, holding a racket in one hand and a ball in the other, standing confidently by the net as if ready to serve. The inscriptions read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ALTHEA GIBSON,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” and “TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION.”

Tennis fans and collectors alike can be among the first to own the 2025 American Women Quarter honoring Althea Gibson. The three-roll set includes 120 circulating-quality coins minted in Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
This special release is more than just a collectible — it’s a celebration of a woman whose courage and achievements transformed American sports forever. Through this coin, the U.S. Mint ensures that Althea Gibson’s legacy continues to inspire generations to come.
