Dynamic on dirt, Luciano Darderi captured his fifth career title today.
The second-seeded Darderi broke in the final game defeating Yannick Hanfmann 7-6(6), 7-5 to win the Chile Open on the red clay of Santiago.
Darderi’s title run comes the day after compatriot Flavio Cobolli beat Frances Tiafoe in the Acapulco final on Saturday. It’s the fifth time in Open Era history two Italian men won ATP titles in the same week.
The 24-year-old Darderi is 21-2 on dirt across all levels since last July. Since the start of the 2024 season, Darderi has scored 48 clay-court wins, which is second only to Argentinean Francisco Cerundolo (49 clay wins in that span), who beat the Italian in last month’s Buenos Aires final.
Darderi drew first-break blood for a 2-1 lead.
The 34-year-old Hanfmann broke back at 30 to level 4-all.
In a tense tiebreaker, Darderi whipped some heavy forehands converting his second set point to snatch a one-set lead.
The pair traded breaks in the third and fourth games of the second set.
Darderi won 12 of his final 15 points on serve in building a 6-5 lead. Riding his forehand, Darderi broke to close out a one hour, 47-minute triumph, denying Hanfmann his maiden ATP title.
The 34-year-old Hanfmann doubled Darderi’s winner total (30 to 15) but also committed twice as many unforced errors (32 to 16).
