Mirra Andreeva Returns to the Desert as Defending Tennis Champ

March 5, 2026 by Anita Stahl

The gates have opened at Tennis Paradise, and the energy at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden is already shifting into high gear. While the sun beats down on the hard courts, all eyes are on the returning champion, Mirra Andreeva, who back in the Main Draw with a target on her back and a smile on her face.

It’s been quite a year for the young star. After her massive breakthrough here and in Dubai last season, the tennis world has been watching to see how she handles the pressure of the professional tour. While she admitted to some “on and off” results recently, she looked sharp and composed during her opening practice sessions.

The momentum of a title defense can be heavy, but Mirra seems to be taking it all in stride. After her session, she told the press that she isn’t sweating the points she has stored in the vault.

“I was worried about defending points in Dubai since Roland Garros,” Mirra shared. “But then actually when I came to Dubai, the only thing I felt is excitement of being there again… Here is the same thing. I’m just so excited to be here as a defending champion.”

Off the court, the story is just as grounded. Mirra is navigating life on the circuit with her family and a not-so-“ultra-mini” Goldendoodle by her side. She’s also kept her winning team intact, noting that her relationship with coach Conchita Martinez remains a perfect balance of hard work and humor.

“We still have a lot of fun,” Mirra said of her coach. “We still work a lot and we know when it’s time to maybe stop having fun and really get into work.”

With no signs of nerves and a support system in place, Mirra is looking to turn those break points into another deep run in the desert. She moves into her opening match later this week with the confidence of someone who has been there and done it before.
