Jannik Sinner and Joao Fonseca will appropriately be getting night-session treatment at the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday. This fourth-round showdown is without question the biggest match of the day.
The question is: will it be competitive?
Fonseca obviously has the talent to hang with Sinner. But does he have the experience? This is the first time the 19-year-old Brazilian has ever found himself in the last 16 of a Masters 1000 tournament. Granted, he has a top-10 win at a Grand Slam (d. Andrey Rublev at the 2025 Australian Open) and is an ATP 500 champion (Basel 2025).
The world No. 35 went into this season less than 100 percent due to a back injury, but he is looking good in Indian Wells. He has advanced with victories over Raphael Collignon, Karen Khachanov (saved two match points), and Tommy Paul. Fonseca’s reward is a first-ever showdown against Sinner.
The second-ranked Italian is bidding for his first Indian Wells title after missing the event last year due to suspension. He has cruised so far, dismissing Dalibor Svrcina and Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.
This should be a fun one and the atmosphere will be electric, but the likely outcome is a routine win for Sinner.
