American Tennis Royalty Returns To Wimbledon • Julie Heldman’s Story
- Updated: July 12, 2019
Julie Heldman via Instagram:
I’ve just spent a week visiting @wimbledon. I played the Championships nine times, between 1965 and 1974, and returning there flooded me with a wide range of emotions, reflecting my many experiences there. Despite Wimbledon’s many improvements, the site remains recognizable as the Grand Old Lady of tennis. But parts of my trip were unique, especially the absence of rain for the entire week. I loved being recognized by so many folks, and hanging out at the Last Eight Club, where I got to rub shoulders with the likes of Ion Tiriac, Fred Stolle, Betty Stove, Peggy Michel and Judy Dalton. And I enjoyed the book signing at the Wimbledon Tennis Gallery, where I swapped tennis stories with Richard Evans and John Beddington, pioneers of the early days of professional tennis.

I did lots of interviews about the book, and I remain thrilled that Driven is being extremely well received both here and across the Pond. As recently as a few months ago, I didn’t think I could manage such a big trip. I’m extremely proud that I was able to do so, grateful that Bernie accompanied me, and thrilled that the trip was so terrific. #driven
